Erie humidity and the cheap collar
A ferrule is a small cylinder of nylon or metal. It is not supposed to be a sponge. Bargain nylon, the kind that arrives in a bag of mixed IDs and sits on a pegboard in a warehouse that also sells lawn chairs, is already a sponge before it ever sees a golf shaft. Lake Erie does not create that problem. It finishes it.
Toledo’s summer air is wet in a way that does not feel dramatic until you keep a humidity card in a sealed cabinet. The card in Suite 8 goes from blue to a doubtful lavender by late June if we leave the door cracked. The river is right there. Maumee Bay State Park is a short drive. Golfers play in the morning, throw the set in a trunk that has been baking, then park the same car by the water for lunch. The nylon on the neck rides through all of that. If the stock was dry and turned with a wall that still has some honesty, the ring mostly shrugs. If the stock was pegboard-soft, the ring takes on water, the color blooms white, and the sit goes proud of the hosel paint. Golfers call that a loose head. Sometimes the head is loose. Often the collar is just loud.
We can tell pegboard nylon by how it turns. It gums the tool. It smells faintly sweet when the lathe gets after it. Cabinet stock turns like a rim. Corinne came off a glass-finishing floor; she still talks about rims. A ferrule OD that mushrooms over the paint is the same class of miss as a glass rim that wandered. Cheap collars mushroom because the material was never dense enough to hold a turn in wet air. You can polish the mushroom. You cannot un-drink the lake.
The humidity re-seat on our tariff exists because this is not rare. We recut or replace, dry the neck, and use stock that has lived with a card, not with a lawn-chair inventory. We also ask where the club sleeps. A hallway closet is one climate. A trunk that also holds hockey pads is another. A garage that faces the river is a third. The same ring behaves differently in each, which is why a phone photo taken under a fluorescent tube is a bad quote. White bloom looks like dust in that light. In daylight on Superior Street it looks like a weather report.
People want a spray or a sealant. We will wipe a fillet. We will not paint a moisture barrier onto nylon and call it a product. If you want a collar that does not drink, aluminum exists, and it brings its own problems — galling, scratches, a different turn. Most irons should stay nylon. Nylon should stay dry until it is on the neck, and then it should be allowed to live like a club, not like a sponge in a cup holder.
If your ring went cloudy after a week of river holes, bring the club and the rest of the set. Tess will want to see whether the bloom is one iron or a family. Marek will want to know whether the head still holds. Corinne will want the humidity card to stay blue. That is the whole shop, pointed at a cylinder you could hide in a fist. The lake is bigger. The ring still has to sit.
